The 50th-anniversary issue of the Decorative Arts Society Journal, published in November 2026, features my tribute to Martin Battersby, a multi-talented figure whom I first met in 1968 and who was a great source of inspiration for me. The essay, ‘Martin Battersby – ‘‘a white blackbird’’’, is based primarily on my recollections. Read here.
A portrait photograph of Battersby, in his Art Nouveau dining room, features in my Inspirations.
‘Veruschka and her desert bikinis’
I was invited by editor Jonathan Wingfield to contribute to the autumn-winter 2025 issue of his magazine System. His idea was to invite a number of writers associated with fashion photography to select a favourite fashion image from the past and write a short essay about it.
I chose a striking cover headshot of Veruschka by Franco Rubsrtelli from 1968 for the Telegraph Magazine. See the feature here.
Veruschka features in my Inspirations leaping in the jungle, her near-naked body splashed with body-paint.
